    1.0 General Description

1.1 SS / FO / BO a. SS - Solid State (LED) Type of illumination. b. FO - Fiber Optic (Light delivery system). c. BO - Blank out (Type of sign). d. Horizontal dimension of sign face (Any size). e. Vertical dimension of sign face (Any size).

    2.0 Message

2.1 All standard FHWA legends available in single or multi-message overlay.

    3.0 General Description (Two Way)

3.1 Each side of a two way Solid State Fiber Optic Blank-Out Traffic Sign shall be capable of displaying message(s) as in 2.1. 3.2 A two-way sign shall be serviceable from either of the two sides.

    4.0 Functional Requirements

4.1 All messages shall be clearly legible attracting attention under any lighting conditions. At full intensity the sign will be highly visible anywhere within an approximate 20-degree cone centered about the optic axis. 4.2 The sign shall completely blank-out when not energized. No phantom words or legend shall be seen under any ambient light condition. 4.3 Messages are displayed by a single or double row of glass fiber bundles (depending upon application). 4.4 In most applications, bundles shall be arranged so that in the event of failure of one light source the other shall continue to provide a discernible message. 4.5 A 1/8" matte/clear polycarbonate lens mounted in the doorframe protects the entire sign face. 4.6 The sign face shall consist of: a. Weatherproof housing and door. b. Fiber Optic module. c. Light sources. d. Transformers. 4.7. The color of any message may be changed in the field by replacment of the solid state lamp, without removing the sign from the case. 4.8 Solid State lamps shall be used. 4.9 The display shall sustain an average 100,000-hour life. 4.10 Transformers shall be used to reduce the incoming 120 volts AC to the lamp manufacturer suggested operating voltage and current. 4.11 The sign shall be capable of continuous operation over a range in temperatures from -35 degrees to +140 degrees Fahrenheit (-37 degrees to +60 degrees Celsius).

    5.0 Mechanical Construction

5.1 Aluminum Housings a. Two way housings shall be constructed of extruded aluminum alloy 6063-T5 which shall not be less than .125" wall thickness, 12" deep. All components shall be readily accessible when either the front or back doors are opened. b. One way housings shall be constructed of extruded aluminum alloy 6063-T5 which shall not be less than .125" wall thickness, 8" deep with a .063" aluminum alloy 3003-H14 back welded into the housing. c. All corners and seams of the one or two-way housings are heli-arc welded to provide a weatherproof seal around the entire case. d. Continuous stainless steel hinges, .040" x 1 ¼" open, shall connect the housing and doors. e. Doors shall be extruded aluminum alloy 6063-T5 which shall not be less than .125" wall thickness. Doors shall have one side removable to gain access to sign face. (Not required for routine maintenance). f. Door gaskets shall be 3/16" x 1" neoprene to provide a weatherproof seal. g. Sign face shall be .080" aluminum alloy 3003-H14 and shall have the fiber optic assembly mounted to it. h. Entire housing assy. shall be acid etched and coated with zinc-chromate primer and finished with high-grade matte black enamel. Average dry film thickness of paint coats shall be 2 mils. i. Sign shall have one or more stainless steel #3 - ¼ turn link-locks per door to tightly secure the door into the gasket. j. A visor shall be provided to protect the sign face from direct sunlight during the day. The depth of the visor shall be 7". k. Mounting hubs shall be of cast aluminum alloy with 1 ½" standard pipe thread. The hub is mounted on its gasket to sign housing by three 5/16" x 1" stainless steel hex head bolts and nuts. l. Drainage shall be provided by four drain holes located at the four corners of the housing bottom.

    6.0 Fiber Optic Modules

6.1 The fiber optic modules and associated components shall be assembled directly to the sign face and shall have an inside back cover to provide protection to the module. The fiber shall consist of fiber optic glass bundles arranged to define the required message. The fiber optic bundles shall be ground smooth and optically polished at the input and output ends for maximum light transmission. 6.2 The glass bundles shall be mounted through the sign face from the inside. Number of bundles varies according to message. 6.3 Door panels and bundle termination holders shall be colored flat black to minimize legibility when deactivated and maximize legibility when activated. No color shall appear when deactivated regardless of ambient light conditions. 6.4 All fasteners and hardware shall be corrosion-resistant stainless steel. All components shall be readily accessible for maintenance when the door is open. 6.5 With standard hardware and locks, only standard tools are needed for lamp replacement.

    Warranty

All products will be warranted to be free of defects due to material and workmanship for a period of two (2) years.
