How We Improve Safety at Rail Grade Crossings

The U.S. experiences thousands of railroad-related accidents each year, with Operation Lifesaver reporting 2,257 highway-rail grade crossing collisions and 264 fatalities in 2024. Here at National Sign & Signal, it’s one of our main missions as a road sign distributor is to increase safety so these tragedies are much less likely happen at railroad crossings.

In this month’s blog, we’re highlighting our DADDS’ railroad crossing signs and how they’re designed to increase safety on railroad crossings.

The DADDS’ Railroad Crossing Sign

DADDS’ rail grade crossing safety system improves crossing safety with retractable delineators, bollards, LED signs, and smart monitoring. These features detect trains, alert drivers, and block vehicles during crossings.

The system installs negative resistance delineators (Model 100) or positive resistance barriers (Model 400) at grade crossings to prevent train-car collisions. The base DADDS system can control and report data on up to 20 additional traffic control devices, with options for unlimited expansion and interfaces with multiple grade crossing status systems.

Real-time information is transmitted to Automatic Train Control Systems via the proprietary controller communications module system. This system complies with all FRA standards for Class 7 rail grade crossing operations and facilitates an optimally safe environment for both trains and motorists.

Notable features of the DADDS Railroad Crossing Sign include:

  • Optional monitoring features provide extra information such as tamper and breach status, CCTV feeds, and system health reports.
  • Built-in backup power prevents downtime during outages.
  • The intelligent barriers communicate with Intelli-Monitor and ITCS, offering 24/7 real-time system diagnostics over direct or wireless connections, including Ethernet, cellular, or satellite.
  • The system uses standard internet protocols for communication and integrates smoothly with new or existing safety equipment, traffic signs, loop detectors, and motorized gates.
  • Custom solutions are available, and the monitoring software is compatible with Microsoft Windows.
